Mike - Team Wolverine Athletics
Tell us about yourself: Myself and Randi moved to the coast in October 2016. We had thought we would always be renting but by a great twist of fate we managed to get together a deposit for a home and found click homes and found the perfect home and location. We both love trail running and decided to put on the first ultra marathon on the coast. Fast forward from this summers race and we formed team Wolverine Athletics to host more events on the coast that being together the great coastal community we have and the great trail running community. Our vision is to build a great eco tourism business that gets the community together and supports other local businesses.
Tell us about your business: Our business is centered around our passion for trail running and the great outdoors. Like most businesses ours started with a simple idea to host the Sunshine Coasts first Ultra Marathon. The initial thought was to try and put on a race just the once and it was a break even event with no though to it being a business. But as we planned the event we got to meet so many more of the local business owners and our neighbors on the coast. This made us thought maybe we could make organizing outdoor recreation events and trail running into an eco tourism business that could help us become our own bosses, help the coast develop and environmental friendly component to attracting tourism and we could help support local businesses through sponsorship and internships. in August 2017 we formed Team Wolverine Athletics and in 2018 we now provide weekly trail clincs, we have our small trail race series starting in just over a week, our ultramarathon is beating last years number of entrants and we have months left till registration closes. In the summer we will bring the Vancouver International Film Festival and in October we have the Soames grinder the first event of its kind on the coast. We already have plans for 2019 to expand our events even more than in 2018.
What's your favourite thing about the Sunshine Coast: The community, we have made more friends in a year on the coast than we made in 3 years of being in Vancouver.
