Bailey and Mike - Bruins West Coast Taxidermy
Name: Bailey and Mike Bruins
Business: Bruins West Coast Taxidermy
Phone: (778) 487-2009
Tell us about yourself: We moved from Southern Alberta in December 2016 with the intention of opening our taxidermy studio on the Sunshine Coast.
Hitting the milestone of one year in business on February 1st, 2017. We have had incredible community support through this first year, and have met so many wonderful coasters! This transition was made so easy for us due to the fact the local people were so very supportive!
We feel that taxidermy is an artistic endeavor to preserve and respect an animal since passed. We cater to not only the hunting community that wish to preserve the memory of self sustenance through ethical wildlife management, but also education by using the art of taxidermy for teaching, as well as preservation of found dead wildlife that people wish to have immortalized.
In my (Bailey's) previous career as a Zookeeper at the Calgary Zoo I had the pleasure of educating thousands of people about the animals that call our Canadian wilderness home, and Mike has been in the Canadian Foothills and Rockies his entire life witnessing some of these amazing animals up close and personal.
We have had the pleasure of utilizing these preserved animals here to educate about animal awareness, and behavior. You can learn a lot about an animal through hands on experiences such as seeing the size and muscle structure.
We absolutely love to connect with people, and open the discussion surrounding this art form and lifestyle. We always have a hot pot of coffee on the go, and would love to have you pop in and say hello, share your wildlife stories, or just ask questions!
Tell us about your business: Our services include: Skull and bone cleaning, traditional taxidermy services such as shoulder mounts, life size animals, rugs, birds, and small mammals.
We also offer non-traditional pet memorial services, commission “for sale” taxidermy items and art for someone wanting this in their living space, office, or cabin. And we sell hunting licenses as well as fresh and tidal water fishing licenses.
What's your favourite thing about the Sunshine Coast: We have so many favorite things about the Sunshine Coast!
We absolutely love the sense of community and support. It doesn’t matter what walk of life, the open dialogue to learn someone else’s lifestyle, and acceptance of people as individuals is so welcoming.
We love the fact that one second we can be at the water front fishing for salmon, or setting a crab trap for a fresh wild caught dinner, or head up the mountain to get a glimpse of some of the unbelievable wildlife that call the coast home.
And the River Otters! We cannot get enough of their coastline antics!
The laid-back atmosphere of the coast is a great change from the hustle bustle of the lifestyle in southern Alberta. We absolutely do not regret this transition.
